For example. Computing hardware usually requires a controlled environment to function properly. For most businesses, the temperature and humidity requirements can be satisfied by an HVAC system. However, a room full of computing equipment can produce a large amount of heat. Consequently, the HVAC must be sized to handle the additional heat load from the localized computer equipment.

Many computing devices operate on 120 VAC, 60 Hz, single-phase power. Other equipment requires 240 VAC, 60 Hz, single-phase power. However, this voltage requires special wiring and plug for the outlet.

Other devices may operate on 240VAC, 60 Hz, three-phase power. That requires special wiring in the wall from the circuit breaker panel to the outlet.

Should an electrical device require a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI), that is another electrical infrastructure that needs special consideration.

Your overall power requirements may exceed the capacity in the building you are using, or planning to use, to house your small business. A room full of laptops, PCs, monitors, printers, servers, Internet modem, WiFi antennas, TV set, a coffee pot, etc., can easily draw more power than the room was originally designed to provide. Even if you are having no difficulties now, you could be on the threshold of throwing a circuit breaker.

An easy assessment of individual room power requirements versus circuit breaker provisions could save you a lot of angst in the future.
